Useful Tips for Expanding the Look of Small Rooms

If you have a room in your home that you feel is on the smaller side and you’re wondering if there’s something you can do about it, you’re in luck! With the right knowledge and a little effort, it’s actually very possible to make a room feel much bigger and take full advantage of the space you have. One such idea is an interior repaint project! Keep reading to learn more about how this idea, along with a few others, might be the secret to granting you more space.

1. Use Light Paint Colors

It goes without saying that a fresh coat of paint can work wonders to add more space to virtually any room in your home. While you may want to avoid pure white, which can look a little odd in small spaces, lighter colors can still trick the eyes into making space feel more open. Consider a light blue pale to expand a tiny bathroom or a light gray or neutral tan to give that guest bedroom or kitchen a little bit more of an open ambiance. Avoid gaudy or flashy colors though, as they can be jarring!

2. Add a Large Mirror

Mirrors are great for effectively doubling the look of a space; especially a large mirror that occupies most of one of the walls in a room. That said, consider investing in a large, wall-mounted mirror to expand your space and to keep light bouncing around the room, which will further aid in its perceived spaciousness. If you’re working in a bathroom, consider a vanity mirror over the sink.

3. Incorporate Houseplants

Houseplants can make a space more breathable and open too, so if you have a green thumb, consider scattering a few small plants throughout your home in rooms you’d like to open up. The plants don’t even have to be alive—fake house plants can do the trick, too! You can even find options that complement the paint color scheme of your home.

4. Consider More Lighting

A dark room feels small and enclosed, while a well-lit room can feel quite airy and open. You should try to incorporate more lighting strategically placed throughout the room to brighten up those small nooks and crannies that would otherwise be cast in shadow. It’s best to orient lighting so it sweeps broadly across different surfaces throughout the room—this can make a new coat of paint look even more impressive, too!

5. Eliminate Clutter

Clutter and excess bulky furniture can make a small room feel cramped, so if you have any furniture throughout your home’s smallest rooms that you don’t need, consider moving or storing it to free up space. Also, be sure to clear any clutter off of countertops, and put away toiletries in bathrooms.
