Should I Paint My Own House or Hire a Painter?
December 4, 2024
House painting sometimes feels like a very straightforward job that can be completed without the need for professional assistance – however, if you’ve ever painted a house yourself, you might be inclined to disagree! While painting might not seem as extensive or difficult as working on the foundation of your home or adding new additions and amenities, there are still quite a lot of things to consider to ensure the job is done correctly, timely, and affordably. Here’s what you need to know so you can have a better idea of when to paint yourself versus when it’s best to turn toward a team of pros.
When Is It Best to Handle the Painting Myself?
Here are a few scenarios that are often suited for DIY painting projects:
- If you’re just painting an accent wall or a single room, you can often complete this project yourself without too much hassle, assuming you’ve gathered all supplies, prepared the room, and left plenty of time for cleanup.
- If your walls show no signs of damage, either physical or moisture-related, you can usually carry out the project yourself. If there’s very minor damage, you can also likely tackle repairs on your own.
- If you’re going with a similar color as the old paint, you likely won’t need more than one coat and primer; this makes the actual painting much faster and easier to complete.
When Should I Hire a Painter?
Simply put, in many cases it is usually best to hire a team of painters to complete your project:
- When painting several rooms, an entire floor, or multiple floors within a home, you’re looking at an extensive process. For the sake of consistency and timeliness, it’s often better to hire a painter. The same applies to homes with unique architectural features.
- If your walls are in dire need of repair and require waterproofing, sanding and scraping, or other extensive prep work, you’ll want to hire professionals to save time and reduce the cost of supplies.
- If you’ve selected a new color for your walls that’s a big change, especially if you’re going from a darker shade to a lighter one, a little more painting and labor will be involved, meaning that delegating is a smart move.
At the end of the day, it’s up to you to decide if you’re willing to paint yourself or if your project is better left in the hands of trustworthy professionals. You shouldn’t worry so much about the cost when weighing this decision, either – painting is a worthwhile investment that boosts the value of your home, and both options have comparable rates. All of that said, the more effort that’s put into your project, the better the end result will be!
