Your Painting Company Knows When Your House Needs a Paint Job
December 8, 2017
After living in your home as long as you have, you’ve been able to fill it with all sorts of memories. Whether it’s pictures of your friends and family you cherish or that antique coffee table you use on a daily basis, your home has become your sanctuary. Then one day, as you’re pulling into your driveway, you take a look at the color of the exterior.
As you get closer, you notice some chips of paint are coming off. It seems it might be about time to add a fresh coat. Maybe even a new color? Either way, your nearby painting company is here to help. They’ve even included some tips to help you determine if your home is ready for new paint.
How Often Should I Paint the Exterior?
Typically, homes should be painted every 7 to 10 years, but this varies depending on the material in the house and the region you live in. Cement fiberboard needs repainting every 10 to 15 years while traditional cladding needs it even more often. If your house is new, check to see if priming the wood before painting is possible to minimize swelling and shrinking. Plan on painting your home within five years afterwards.
Areas that are often exposed to sunlight should be repainted every 5 years, but in areas where there is less direct sunlight, paint can last 4 to 10 years on wood and 20 years on vinyl and aluminum siding.
Consider the Condition of Your Paint
The moment you notice paint chips that are visible from the street, you should start planning to repaint the house. The earlier you begin, the less prep work you’ll need to minimize exterior damage, such as scraping flaking paint or replacing wood.
As mentioned earlier, UV rays from sunlight can cause paint to fade and even transform to a different shade than used originally. To prevent your beige coat from going pink, make sure to use an exterior grade paint that can handle UV effects.
While sun bleaching is common for areas exposed to sunlight, you’ll want to look for fading colors in shady areas as well. Look for mysterious stains dripping downward on the paint, as fading in these areas indicates problems with the vapor barrier or water intrusion. Call an expert if you have trouble finding the source of your water leak.
During your examination, you may also find flaking, bubbling, or cracking paint. This can signal dry rot, wet rot, or mold due to improper weatherproofing. If you live in an area with strong sunlight, extreme humidity, ocean breezes, or blowing sand, make sure to use a proper weatherproofing product.
