Deciding to paint the exterior of your home is an exciting step towards refreshing its appearance and enhancing your curb appeal; however, it’s often a project that’s easier to describe than it is to actually carry out! A lot of factors go into exterior painting, but one that’s often overlooked is timing – and believe it or not, there is an ideal time of year to go about this process! Continue reading below to learn more about some of the weather-related factors that affect exterior painting and why you should plan your project accordingly.

When Is the Best Time to Paint My Home’s Exterior?

Most professionals will tell you that early summer or early fall is the best time to paint your home’s exterior, meaning months like April and May or September and October are considered “ideal,” though it depends on where you’re located too. This is because the way paint dries is directly related to temperature and conditions at the time of application.

Ideally, you’ll want to choose a day where the weather is consistently warm and dry – so you may need to check the weather in your area a few days before, as well as after, your planned painting day. Fall is a favorite season for exterior painting because cooler outdoor temperatures are often welcomed, but more importantly, temperatures tend to be more consistent during the autumn from day to night. This means that the paint shouldn’t have trouble adhering to the surfaces, nor should it not cure and dry improperly.

When Should I Avoid Exterior Painting?

Many paint manufacturers recommend a minimum outside temperature for painting; the general understanding is that you shouldn’t paint outside if the temperature is below 50 degrees Fahrenheit, but some modern formulas will allow you to go as low as 35 degrees. That said, it’s still recommended that you don’t paint your home’s exterior after November – but given that Texas gets pretty hot, you might be able to get away with waiting until early December. Other than that, avoid painting on days that might have rain or inclement weather – if your new paint job hasn’t had enough time to properly cure and it rains, you’ll have some pretty big problems!

It’s always recommended that you consult with a local team of professionals about the best time to paint your home’s exterior, as they’ll have plenty of experience in the matter. Better yet, they’ll even be able to complete your project for you if you’d like, ensuring that the weather or any other elements won’t detract from your beautiful results.
