How Often Should You Paint the Exterior of Your House?

July 31, 2017

green paintbrush on an exterior wall A fresh coat of paint can work wonders for your home, especially for the outside. But how often should you take on the project of a new paint job for the exterior of your house? The upcoming fall season will (hopefully) bring cooler temps to our part of the country, which means it’s going to be a great time to paint the outside of your home. The frequency with which you paint, though, depends on a few factors — like what your house is made of, the type of paint you have, and how much sun exposure it receives. Keep reading to find out more from your Frisco painting company!

Consider the Finish

Perhaps one of the most important factors affecting how often you paint the outside of your home is considering the finish, or what it’s made of. If it’s wood or stucco siding, your house will probably need to be repainted somewhere between 4 to 7 years. Staining on wood should be redone every four years or so. Painted brick, a look that’s becoming more popular these days, should last for up to 20 years before it needs redone. A newer home made of new materials should last for longer (like 15 to 20 years) than one made of wood or stucco.

The Most Recent Paint Job Matters

Another important factor to think about when you’re deciding how often to paint your home is how the most recent paint job is holding up. After all, there’s no reason to take on such a considerable project if you don’t really need to. The state of your current paint will depend on everything from how much sun it gets from day to day to what the weather was like on the day it was painted (painting during hot weather can cause the paint to bubble up, for example).

While you’re considering the need for a new coat of paint, survey the existing one first. If there were several coats of paint applied, it should last for longer than just one coat. Lighter colored paints also have longer lifespans. Look out for chips, fading, bubbles, and anything else that gives you the signal that it’s time for an upgrade.

How Often to Paint in Texas

Exterior paint can wear fast here in Texas, where the sun beats down hard every day. In our part of the state, though, we are spared from a lot of the humidity folks around Houston and Austin have to contend with. Just be aware when you’re wondering why your outside paint looks like it’s fading fast that there has to be some price to pay for warm, sunny winters!
