Your Options in Paint Textures
If there’s one thing you’ve got when it comes to textured paint, it’s options. Textures in paint range from very fine to very coarse, and the one that’s right for your project will depend on the look you’re going for as well as the space you are painting. In general, paint with a smooth texture is lighter and offers a subtler effect. Heavier, coarser textures — like popcorn and knockdown — offer a more dramatic, noticeable look. Not so popular anymore, you often find popcorn textures on ceilings. Sand texture can be used on walls or ceilings for a grittier, denser look.
And applying a faux finish is another great way to add a really personal touch to your home. Below are the top four ways to add a personalized finish to your walls. Have fun!
#1: Combing Adds Dimension
Running over wet paint with a comb adds a little depth to your otherwise flat wall. You can choose the pattern you want — zig zags, checkerboard, lines, waves, circles… Have at it, and have fun while you’re at it!
#2: Sponging Creates Interest
Sponging is a popular type of adding texture to your paint. After you have applied all the layers you need, run a sponge over the paint until you have the look you’re going for. The nice thing about texturing is that it is totally up to you, so you can sponge the wall as little or as much as you please.
#3: Rag Rolling Is Easy
Another easy way to make your walls look a little different from the norm is to texture by rag rolling. Dip a rag into an accent color and roll the rag over the wall. Different types of rags, from tee shirts to cheesecloth and burlap, will all produce a unique effect on the overall look.
#4: Smooshing for a Marble Effect
Want your walls to look elegant, like marble? Try smooshing. Once you’ve applied the final glaze coat, place a special plastic sheet (we can talk to you more about what kind) on top of the wall while it’s still wet. Then take the sheet off before it dries — you just may think your walls are made out of marble instead.
