If you’re looking to refresh a room with a new coat of paint, you might be wondering if it’s okay to paint over your existing wallpaper, or if it’s better to remove it first. While painting over wallpaper is sometimes possible, it isn’t always the best long-term solution, nor is it possible in every situation. Ultimately the right choice depends on several different factors, including the condition of the wallpaper, as well as your future plans. Continue reading to learn more about wallpaper removal and how to know when it’s the best option.

When Can I Paint Over My Wallpaper?

Most homeowners are enticed by the idea of simply painting over their existing wallpaper, rather than having to go through the time-consuming process of removing it. It’s usually okay to paint over wallpaper if it’s smooth, free of damage, and overall, in great condition. If there are bumps, tears, or other issues, you’ll want to remove the wallpaper beforehand. It also needs to be thoroughly cleaned beforehand; any dust, dirt, cobwebs, or other debris could prevent the paint from properly adhering. Luckily, you also don’t need specialty paint for painting over wallpaper; a good-quality option should leave you with an even finish and color, assuming the surface was cleaned and in good condition.

When Should I Absolutely Not Paint Over Wallpaper?

On the other hand, there are some red flags that indicate you should remove your wallpaper and prepare your walls before applying paint. Four common situations include:

Your Wallpaper Is Damaged

If your wallpaper has seen better days, it’s always best to remove it before painting. If there are any rips, tears, or areas where bubbling or peeling is occurring, this damage will show through the paint and leave you with a poor finish.

You Have Textured Wallpaper

If you have textured wallpaper, the texture will absolutely show through your paint, no matter how many coats you put on. Always remove textured wallpaper if you’re going to be painting, and be sure to use the correct methods so you aren’t damaging your walls.

It’s Difficult to Correctly Remove the Wallpaper

Older wallpaper often has multiple layers of wallpaper, sometimes two or three, that can make it even more difficult to peel off, but it still needs to be done. The added weight of the paint can also cause underlying layers to loosen over time.

You Want a Long-Term Solution

If you’re planning a long-lasting renovation, it’s often better to remove your wallpaper. While it does take more effort, it prevents future problems from occurring, such as peeling or cracking. It is also often preferred when prepping a home that you’re planning to put on the market down the road.

While painting over wallpaper can be a quick and effective solution for refreshing a room, it’s not always the best option. If you’re unsure about what to do, you shouldn’t hesitate to consult with a team of professionals for their advice – at the end of the day, it’s all about ensuring excellent results!
